LED Lighting Upgrades: How to Improve Your Flashlight's Performance Reading SureFire® Weapon Light LED Conversion: M951 & M961 Upgrade Guide 14 minutes

Your legacy SureFire® M951 or M961 still works every time you switch it on, but at 65 lumens (M951) or 125 lumens (M961), the original incandescent lamp no longer keeps pace with what an LED can deliver. Factor in shorter runtimes and periodic bulb replacements, and the stock setup is the weakest part of an otherwise solid weapon light.

A SureFire® weapon light LED conversion from Malkoff Devices changes that. Their USA-made conversion kits and drop-in modules raise output to as much as 1,200 lumens while keeping the original MH90 body, mount, and controls in service.

This guide walks through the available conversion routes, output and beam differences, compatible models, installation, and battery requirements, so you can choose and install the right upgrade for your light.

WHY CONVERT A LEGACY SUREFIRE® WEAPON LIGHT TO LED?

A Malkoff SureFire® LED conversion can give your M951 or M961 substantially more light while keeping the original MH90 body in service. It also removes the incandescent filament as a potential failure point under recoil or impact.

The increase in output comes partly from LED light efficiency. An incandescent lamp heats a filament to produce light, but much of its electrical input becomes heat and infrared radiation. An LED converts a greater share of that energy into visible light, allowing more output from the available battery power.

That efficiency can support greater output, longer runtime, or a balance of the two, depending on the conversion and batteries. A high-output head may use that advantage to deliver considerably more light rather than run longer than the original lamp. LEDs still generate heat, too, so a powerful LED head can still get hot during use.

With the output and runtime matched to your needs, the LED conversion lets you continue using a familiar SureFire® weapon light. If its body, mount, and switches remain sound, upgrading the light source keeps those components in service while giving you a choice of beam patterns. For a closer look at how output, beam shape, and runtime work together, see our guide to LED lighting upgrades.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MALKOFF LED CONVERSION FOR YOUR M951 OR M961

Malkoff offers several ways to convert legacy SureFire® Millennium weapon lights, including the M951, M952, M961, and M962, along with some versions of the M952V. The right route depends partly on whether you want to replace the complete front lighting assembly or keep the original head and install a Malkoff LED drop-in.

A conversion head replaces the front lighting assembly, while a drop-in packages the LED, driver, and reflector into a module that fits inside a compatible head. For the M951 and M961, Malkoff offers complete conversion kits, standalone adapters for separately selected heads, and M61 drop-in options.

1. MD951 LED CONVERSION KIT: ADAPTER AND HEAD TOGETHER

Malkoff MD951 LED conversion kit for the SureFire® M951

The MD951 kit combines the required adapter with your choice of compatible LED head, making it a straightforward route if you do not already own a suitable head. Current options include the E2HTV3, E2XTV3, E2 Super V3, and E2/M600, with different balances of throw and spill.

Despite its name, the MD951 kit also works with the M961 and M962. On those models, the front body extension tube is removed, changing the light from its original three-CR123 configuration to a two-CR123 configuration. Battery options for the completed conversion are covered later in this guide.

2. MD90 ADAPTER: CHOOSE THE HEAD SEPARATELY

If you already own a compatible Malkoff head or want to select one separately, the MD90 adapter connects the MH90 body to compatible Scout/E-Series-pattern heads. Compatible Scout and MDC heads will thread onto the adapter, but Dual Fuel (DF) heads will not.

Physical fit alone also does not mean every head is suitable for the battery voltage you plan to use, so check the voltage requirements before ordering. As with the MD951 kit, using the MD90 on an M961 or M962 changes the light from a three-cell setup to a two-cell setup.

3. MDM4 WITH M61: A DROP-IN OPTION FOR THE M961 AND M962

Malkoff MDM4 adapter with M61 drop-in for the SureFire® M961 and M962

If you want to retain the M961 or M962's original three-CR123 battery arrangement and stock head, one of the MDM4 adapter kits offer a different route. With these kits you can choose an M61, M91B, or M91T drop-in. Depending on the drop-in, these range in output from 450 to 1,000 lumens and 6,500 to 38,000 candela.

The M61, M91B, and M91T are all rated for the 9-volt input, which suits the original three-cell configuration of these lights. The MDM4 does not fit the M951. Before ordering, check your original lamp assembly against the compatible lamp numbers Malkoff lists for this conversion.

4. M61 DROP-IN: ANOTHER OPTION FOR THE M951

Malkoff M61 LED drop-in to fit SureFire®

The M951 can also use the M61 drop-in without the MDM4 adapter. Malkoff rates the standard M61 at approximately 450 lumens at 6 volts.

Fit can vary across M951 production versions. Installation may require adjustment of the drop-in's spring, use of a fitting ring, or removal of a black grommet in the light's throat. Check the requirements for your particular M951 before ordering.

SUREFIRE® M951 AND M961 LUMENS: STOCK VS. LED CONVERSION

The stock M951 and M961 put out 65 and 125 lumens, respectively. Malkoff’s MD951 conversion kit raises that range considerably, with LED head options listed at approximately 450 to 1,200 lumens depending on the head and battery used.

The M951 can use these heads through the MD951 conversion, and the M961 can use the same conversion after its front body extension is removed. That changes the M961 from its original three-CR123 configuration to a two-cell setup, so output depends on both the head selected and the battery configuration used with the conversion.

Lumens measure total light output, while candela measures the intensity of the beam at its brightest point and helps indicate how strongly the light is concentrated for distance. The figures below compare the available Malkoff head options with each model’s standard incandescent lamp.

Light source Battery Approximate lumens Approximate candela Best for

HOW TO INSTALL THE MD951 CONVERSION KIT ON AN M951 OR M961

The MD951 conversion uses Malkoff’s adapter and a compatible replacement head. Installation is similar on the M951 and M961, but the M961 requires removal of its front body extension before the conversion can be installed. Use Malkoff’s conversion demonstration and current product guidance alongside the steps below.

If the light is mounted on a firearm, unload the firearm and verify that it is clear before starting.

  1. Remove the batteries. Switch off the light and remove all cells before changing any components.
  2. Remove the original front assembly. Unscrew the incandescent head assembly from the MH90 body and set the original parts aside if you may want to return the light to its stock configuration later.
  3. Remove the M961 front body extension. On an M961 or M962, remove the front extension tube that supports the original three-CR123 configuration. The MD951 conversion connects to the main body and changes the light to a two-cell setup.
  4. Install the adapter and replacement head. Fit the supplied Malkoff adapter and compatible LED head to the body. Start the threads carefully and stop if a component does not seat normally rather than forcing it.
  5. Install the correct batteries. Malkoff recommends two CR123 primary batteries or one 16650 Li-ion rechargeable battery for the MD951 conversion. Do not reinstall the M961’s original three-CR123 arrangement with this setup.
  6. Test the light. Confirm that the head illuminates and that the tailcap or remote controls you use operate as expected.

These steps apply to the MD951 head conversion. The MDM4 adapter routes (M61, M91B, or M91T) and the direct M951 M61 installation use different hardware and fit requirements. In particular, M951 production differences can affect whether the M61 needs spring adjustment, a fitting ring, or removal of the black grommet in the light’s throat, so follow the current guidance for the specific conversion you are installing.

BATTERIES, OUTPUT, AND RUNTIME AFTER THE CONVERSION

Battery choice affects more than runtime. Depending on the conversion, it can also change the light’s operating voltage, available output, and how the light behaves as the cells discharge. Use the battery setup specified for the completed conversion rather than assuming the original configuration still applies.

WHICH BATTERIES CAN YOU USE?

Conversion Battery guidance
MD951 kit Use two CR123 primary batteries or one suitable 16650 Li-ion rechargeable cell. Malkoff specifically notes that an 18650 is not compatible with this setup.
MD90 with one of the featured E2 heads Match the battery setup to the selected head’s voltage requirements. With the M951/M961 conversion arrangement covered here, that generally means two CR123 primaries or one suitable 16650 rechargeable cell for the featured heads.
MDM4 M61, MDM4 M91B, or MDM4 M91T on an M961 or M962 The original three-CR123 arrangement is compatible with the included M61, M91B, or M91T, which are rated for 9 volts. Malkoff also states that all three drop-ins can be used with up to two rechargeable Li-ion cells.
Direct M61 drop-in on an M951 Two CR123 primary batteries provide the 6-volt setup used for Malkoff’s published 450-lumen output and approximately 1.25-hour runtime.

For rechargeable use with the MDM4/M61, voltage compatibility alone does not confirm that a particular cell size will fit the host. Check the cell dimensions, count, and fully charged voltage before changing from the original battery arrangement.

WHAT HAPPENS AS THE BATTERIES RUN DOWN?

Not every Malkoff head behaves the same way as voltage falls. The E2HTV3, E2XTV3, and E2 Super V3 are designed to taper gradually below 3.6 volts, with faster low-voltage protection beginning around 3 volts and shutoff below 2.7 volts.

The E2/M600 and M61 use a different approach. Below 3.4 volts, they fall out of regulation and run in direct drive, so output decreases with the available battery voltage rather than following the same low-voltage protection pattern.

That distinction matters most with rechargeable cells. Follow the battery manufacturer’s charging and handling guidance, and do not assume that every head or drop-in provides the same low-voltage protection.

HOW DOES OUTPUT AFFECT RUNTIME?

Higher-output heads generally draw more current, so the brightest option is not always the longest-running one. Malkoff lists the E2HTV3 at approximately 30–45 minutes of full-output runtime on either two CR123 batteries or one 16650 rechargeable cell. The E2/M600, by comparison, is rated for about 1.25 hours at full output on two CR123 batteries, followed by a gradual taper.

That tradeoff is worth considering when choosing a head: more output and throw may be useful for one application, while longer full-output runtime may matter more for another.

Use quality batteries from trusted sources and the appropriate charger for rechargeable cells. Malkoff also warns that unprotected Li-ion cells carry additional risk, so protected cells are the safer default where they are compatible with the light and head. See Malkoff’s batteries and chargers for current options.

These heads are also capable of causing eye damage at close range, so keep the beam out of anyone’s eyes during testing and use.

KEEP YOUR SUREFIRE® WEAPON LIGHT IN SERVICE

If your legacy SureFire® M951 or M961 is still solid, there is no need to retire the whole light just because the original incandescent setup is showing its age. A Malkoff conversion lets you keep the host you already know while updating the part that matters most: the light it puts downrange.

Malkoff builds these conversions for demanding use, and all of its M61 replacement LED modules are fully potted for rough service and recoil. Made in the USA, with some components sourced elsewhere, Malkoff products are built with durability in mind.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SUREFIRE® WEAPON LIGHT LED CONVERSIONS

WILL MY EXISTING TAILCAP OR REMOTE PRESSURE SWITCH STILL WORK AFTER THE CONVERSION?

In most standard setups, yes. The MD951 conversion changes the front lighting assembly rather than the tail end of the light, so the existing tailcap or remote switch can remain in place. If your light uses an aftermarket or nonstandard control, confirm compatibility with Malkoff before ordering.

DOES THE CONVERSION CHANGE THE LENGTH OF MY LIGHT OR HOW IT MOUNTS?

It can change the light’s overall length, but the conversion keeps the original weapon-light body and mounting interface in service. On an M961 or M962, the front body extension tube must be removed before installing the MD951 conversion, changing the light from its original three-cell configuration to a shorter two-cell setup.

The replacement head can also have different exterior dimensions from the original incandescent assembly, so check clearance around lens covers and other front-end accessories after conversion.

CAN I RETURN MY M951 TO ITS ORIGINAL INCANDESCENT SETUP LATER?

Yes, as long as you keep the original parts and have not otherwise modified the light. The Malkoff MD951 conversion uses an included threaded adapter that screws into the M951 body, so the original incandescent assembly can be reinstalled later. Store the original head and related components together if you may want to return the light to its stock configuration.

IS MY CONVERSION COVERED BY MALKOFF’S LIFETIME WARRANTY?

Malkoff’s lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects for the original purchaser, subject to its stated exclusions. Electronics, consumables, normal wear and tear, abuse, alterations, and unauthorized repairs are not covered.

If you are unsure whether a specific issue qualifies, check Malkoff’s warranty terms or contact the team for help.
